I was inspired to start my podcast nearly 6 years ago. I bought the equipment, picked out the theme music, started recording and then… lost all momentum.
I didn’t lose the desire. In fact, my desire had only grown stronger over those years.
I tried again. I hit record... Again, I stalled.
“The timings not quite right.”“I have too much on my plate.”“I’m going to do it when…”“Ughh… I wish I had started 6 years ago.”Why do we lose momentum on the things we clearly can’t stop dreaming about?
Most of the current coaching advice will tell you that the problem is limiting beliefs, a lack of desire, or a lack of discipline.
Having witnessed hundred’s of client’s acheive sustained transformations over the years, I know that, for many of them, these explanations fell short.
Here’s the hard truth.
PEOPLE are only motivated to change when they are inspired or when they are in crisis.
When we get past that initial inspiration (or the crisis) sustained motivation requires something entirely different.
Reward!
We are more than willing to do hard, uncomfortable, and impossible things when we are being rewarded for it.
But here’s the problem. Most big dreams don’t start out with big rewards so we lose momentum and get stuck in the cycle of inspiration, initial action, boredom and procrastination—only to be left frustrated with ourselves that we can’t seem to make our dreams a reality no matter how much we truly want it!
Ugh! As a self-proclaimed ‘'dreamer,’ I get it.
